In my practice I work with video, scanned images, drawing, painting, printmaking, installation and performance, to explore the symbolisation of hair. I am interested in ideas and concepts regarding life, death, sex, femininity, identity and space. In the past I have worked with the seven facial expressions that are universally recognized: happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, surprise, contempt and fear.
Hair can hold symbolic power in different ways. It is part of our body therefore our individual identity. Even though hair may be dead cells, it still keeps the most intimate record of our identity (DNA). At the same time it is changeable and can be easily altered depending on fashion and other cultural aspects. By changing hairstyle you can change the way someone perceives you. Hairstyle can create a recognizable social status of a person such as punks, skinheads, hippies, rastafarians, hasidic jews, or it can be used as a camouflage of the identity of a person.
My interest for hair began when I realised at the age of 25 that I am getting older and I am not immortal.
